The Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene
Today is the first day that our liturgical observance of Saint Mary Magdalene is celebrated as a feast! Previously, today had been an “Obligatory Memorial, ” a lesser observance. Back in June, it was announced that Pope Francis had decided that Saint Mary Magdalene would be commemorated in the liturgy in the same way that the apostles are. She has been called for many centuries the “apostle to the apostles,” since she was the first the announce the resurrection of Jesus from the dead to his closest companions. Read more about Pope Francis’ reasons for doing so here (https://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2016/06/10/160610c.html). And in the meantime, pray that Mary Magdalene, who stayed so faithfully by the Lord both at the cross and at the tomb will help us remain faithful to him in all we say and do. Saint Mary Mary Magdalene, pray for us!
